Archaeology Paper Prize Winners Announced
Congratulations to Cecilia Bahamón, Peter Johnson, Kirstin Krusell! Winning papers can be read here. The deadline for the next paper prize competition will be in May 2012.

Congratulations to the Class of 2011
The JIAAW conferred sixteen undergraduate degrees and one doctorate in Archaeology and the Ancient World, and an M.A. in Old World Archaeology in Art on Sunday, May 29th, 2011.

Congratulations to Danielle Candelora and Morgan Li
Dani and Morgan, concentrators in Archaeology and the Ancient World, were elected to membership in the Rhode Island Alpha of Phi Beta Kappa.

Durusu-Tanriover Awarded Fulbright
JIAAW doctoral student Muge Durusu-Tanriover was awarded an additional year of Fulbright funding by the Institute of International Education, to support her continued studies at Brown.

Arts of Rome's Provinces
Participants in Brown's Arts of Rome's Provinces seminar, funded by the Getty Foundation, are traveling in Oxford, Newcastle, and London this May.

Congratulations to Dr. Feldman Weiss!
Cecelia Feldman Weiss successfully defended her doctoral dissertation, "Living Fluidly: The Uses and Meanings of Water in Asia Minor (2nd c. BCE–2nd c. CE)," on Friday, April 15th.

Bocancea Awarded SHRC Fellowship
JIAAW student Emanuela Bocancea was awarded a 2-year Doctoral Fellowship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada!

Herringer Awarded NSF Fellowship
Doctoral student Susan Herringer (Engineering/Archaeology) will receive a 3-year National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship for her project, "Materials Science versus Archaeology: Are We Talking Strength or Toughness?"

Smith Wins 2011 SAA Student Poster Award
Doctoral student Alexander Smith was honored by the Society for American Archaeology for his poster, “The Metallurgy of Iron Mine Hill: The Use of Cumberlandite in Colonial Iron Artifacts from Rhode Island."

Murphy Awarded Belgian American Educational Foundation Fellowship
Doctoral student Elizabeth Murphy has been selected for a one-year fellowship for her project, "The Social Lives of Production: Analyzing Material from Excavations in the Artisanal Workshops of Roman Sagalassos, Turkey".

Anderson Appointed Curator at Harvard Art Museums
Dr. Lisa Anderson '09 (Ph.D., Archaeology and the Ancient World) has been named Frederick Randolph Grace Assistant Curator of Ancient Art in the Division of Asian and Mediterranean Art.

Craft Awarded Summer Fellowship
Doctoral student Sarah Craft will be a Summer Fellow in Byzantine Studies at Dumbarton Oaks, where she will pursue research on travel infrastructure in Byzantine Anatolia.

Alcock Awarded Loeb Grant
JIAAW Director Sue Alcock has been awarded $20,000 by the Loeb Classical Library Foundation in support of the Brown University Petra Archaeological Project.

Bestock Receives Salomon Research Award
Assistant Professor Laurel Bestock has received a $15,020 Richard B. Salomon Faculty Research Award for the Brown University Abydos Project.

Marston Receives ECI Funding
Postdoctoral Fellow Mac Marston has been awarded a grant from the Environmental Change Initiative to form a new working group, Human Presence in Coastal Ecosystems and Paleoenvironments.

Assistant Professor Laurel Bestock was interviewed by Channel 10 news about the current unrest in Egypt.

Straughn Featured in "Teaching with the News"

Guatemalan Tomb One of Top Discoveries of 2010
Archaeology magazine named the discovery of a royal tomb in Guatemala by a team led by Professor Stephen Houston one of the “Top Discoveries of 2010."

HAB has been selected as an inaugural project of Partners for a New Beginning (PNB), a new partnership between the Aspen Institute and the U.S. State Department.

Artemis and Martha Sharp Joukowsky have received the inaugural Zachariah Allen Award for their commitment and service to the Faculty Club.

RI Hall Awarded Brown's First LEED Gold
Rhode Island Hall has become the first building at Brown to receive gold certification under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program.

JIAAW Welcomes New Faculty
Jeffrey Becker, Allison Davis, Kevin Fisher, Mac Marston, and Meg Watters have joined the faculty of the Institute for the coming academic year.

Brown Team Discovers Royal Tomb in Guatemala
A team of archaeologists led by Stephen Houston found a Mayan tomb, filled with materials that have been preserved for approximately 1,600 years. This major find is featured in National Geographic News, the Providence Journal, Science Daily, Archaeology Magazine, and others.
