Class Description:
This course will provide an in-depth look at the art and architecture of ancient Egypt's New Kingdom, or Empire Period (c. 1500-1100 B.C.). This was a time of intense interaction with other cultures, including trade and warfare, and this internationalism and its associated war booty had a profound effect on the art of the period. We will study everything from the exquisite reliefs of Hatshepsut's mortuary temple at Thebes to the intimate style of the Amarna period, from the treasures of Tutankhamun to the enormous building projects of Ramses II. Students will leave with a thorough understanding of the functions and aesthetics of the art and architecture that reflected both Egypt's long-standing traditions and its new position in the world at this fascinating time.
