Personal History

Originally, I'm from Rhode Island and Texas (grew up in RI and then moved to Texas just early enough to it confusing), and earned my B.A. in 2004 n Economics and Classics. I'm in my third year in the graduate program in Classics, completing my Master's this semester. Fourth and fifth century Roman (political and military) history interest me, as does archaeology.. I've always been fascinated by how things work (and why they sometimes don't), and as a result I like to focus on ancient technology, construction, and engineering (as well as modern)--I suspect I'm really an engineer at heart--or perhaps a librarian, since I love databases and information systems.

Current Work

I'm writing my Master's Thesis in Classics on the historicity (or lack thereof?) in the speeches of Ammianus Marcellinus's Res Gestae. Ammianus was the last great Roman historian, writing in the A.D. 4th century, and his extant work covers from the late 350s to 378, including several incidents which he himself was a participant. It's a pretty good read (Ammianus, not my thesis!).
