Images were taken on April 11, from 3-5 pm in downtown Providence at the sites marked on each page. Images were shot with a well-maintained Nikon F3 SLR, using a Nikkor 50mm and a Kiron 28-105mm zoom lens (as needed), on Fujichrome Velvia 100 (color slide film). Slides were then professionally developed and scanned on an HP 8270 Scanner using the built-in adapter at 4800 dpi into JPEGs--though, in retrospect, they should have been TIFF files at this point (to have prevented them from being compressed, decompressed, edited, and recompressed). These files were subsequently color, contrast, and level adjusted using the "Auto-level," "Auto-contrast," and "Auto-color" algorithms in Adobe Photoshop CS2, and then saved again as JPEGs saved at maximum file size. Finally, they were processed by the Zoomify application for display on this site.

Maps were added to each page to help show where and what exactly is shown in each image. The maps used to show the approximate locations of the sites were captured screenshots from "hybrid" satellite and GIS data from maps.google.com (links to the original maps are listed under each edited map). Each map was modified to show the approximate location and direction from which the images were taken, the approximate location of each footprint, the buildings in the satellite photo which had been removed (leaving the footprint), and estimated location of "dead" buildings which were torn down before the satellite photo was taken.

Special thanks to Harry Cawthorn for use of his equipment and advice.
