Welcome to Brown University’s Orientation Program for Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistants!
We are very grateful to the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State for its support of this orientation program in Rhode Island. In addition, we are proud to have been chosen by the Institute for International Education () which administers the Fulbright FLTA Program to host one of this summer’s orientations.
Brown University has been selected along with seven other distinguished universities to host this year’s orientations.
The scheduled events are designed to provide participants an overview of the goals and traditions of the Fulbright Program and the policies and regulations of the Institute for International Education. You will be introduced to American academic culture and practice, including aspects of student life and university policies and operating procedures that may be quite different from what you are used to in your country. Panels and workshops will provide insights into U.S. social values and norms, as well as practical tips and advice on how to adjust more quickly to life in this country. One and a half days will be devoted exclusively to introducing current best practices in foreign language instruction within the context of American higher education.
Finally, we have also set aside opportunities to interact with Brown University undergraduates and faculty, and to participate in fun activities such as touring the Rhode Island State House and shopping at Providence Place, the city’s modern urban mall!
Our aim with this orientation is to ease your transition to life in the U.S., to prepare you for your experiences over the coming year, and to advance the purpose of the Fulbright Programs - the promotion of mutual understanding and respect among peoples.
