When John Hawkes died on May 15, 1998, American literature lost one of its internationally acknowledged modern masters and Brown University one of its most original and beloved teachers. To whatever he did--whether writing or teaching, directing the Brown University Program in Creative Writing or putting a horse through its paces--John Hawkes brought an awesome intensity, a passionate commitment, an exuberant rage for beauty. "Excess, my dears," as one of his characters exclaims in Innocence in Extremis, "Excess!" On April 13 and 14, 1999, friends, family, and former students returned to Brown University to celebrate the extraordinary life and art of this gifted and inimitable man. Co-sponsored by the Office of the President and the Program in Creative Writing. |
