Honors in Creative Writing
Literary Arts concentrators who wish to complete their concentration with Honors in Creative Writing must include two 1000-level workshops or independent studies among their courses and must, in addition, complete a thesis. The thesis is a substantial body of work that reflects the student’s achievement during his/her years in the Program: a collection of stories or poems, a novel, a play or screenplay, or an extended electronic/mixed media project. Students may complete a thesis by taking either LR 1510 (an independent study) or by taking LR 1410 (the Honors/Capstone workshop).
In addition, two other Honors/Capstone options are available to students who began enrollment at Brown in Spring, 2005 or earlier:
English concentrators who wish to receive Honors in Creative Writing, or students with a concentration other than English or Literary Arts who wish to complete a Capstone in Creative Writing, can do so by:
- Taking two courses in a particular genre* (at the beginning, intermediate, or advanced level) by the end of the junior year;
- Completing an Honors thesis/Capstone project in one of four ways: by completing an advanced level workshop; taking an Honors/Capstone workshop; taking an independent study in creative writing; or by working independently on the project and receiving no academic credit.
*Students wishing to complete Honors/Capstone in Cross-Disciplinary writing must take either two special topics workshops, one special topics plus one genre workshop, or one workshop in each of two different genres.
