The proposed work will be a multimedia installation of image, text, and video. This work is the first of a projected five part series framing individually and collectively authored objects to reflect on the the legacy of Malcolm X (as icon, as hero, as analysis, as commodity). JST BCZ UR PARANOID. . . examines the context of hysteria and paranoia which accompany discourse on issues of racial difference.
JST BCZ UR PARANOID. . . will deploy the main gallery space at The Alternative Museum as staging area for a series of tableaus. Malcolm X will be posed as avenging angel, decorative sign and priest of a fragmented, mediated cult. Mr. X is the serialized signifier that sparks contradictory readings, phantasms of "otherness", a looping of the repressed under the "level playing field" of America. On this surface of differences hidden under likeness we will stage a series of reflections, inversions, deviations, implosions.
