The tableau that contains the many disparate elements of the installation is the large video projection. This piece is the hallucination produced by the icon of Malcolm X. Malcolm X sound-bites are intercut with images of crosses burning and the Fruit of Islam militia marching. Throughout this installation, Malcolm X is never seen whole, but in coded pieces, lips moving in front of a microphone, finger pointing, eyes staring out from the hornrims. The argument seems to be that there are no real Malcolm X's or many real Malcolm X's, the search for one is always a rhetorical device in the service of an ideological stance.
