INSIDE THE WHALE INSIDE
a hypertextual journey into the belly of modernism
by Robert Scholes
This hypertext has one main thread: an essay on the peculiar surfacing of whale images and references to the Spanish baroque painter known as El Greco, in certain British and American modernist writers, including Aldous Huxley, Ernest Hemingway, George Orwell, Henry Miller, Anais Nin, and D. H. Lawrence. That thread may be followed by clicking on the word "next" at the bottom of every page. Words and phrases in blue type can also be clicked. These will lead to supplementary materials, often visual. The word "Back" in blue will lead back to the page you just left. Finally, it should be said that this is all an experiment, a work in progress, which may swim or sink. Happy whaling!
