QUEER WINDOW
/ about us

This year Brown University is proud to present "Queer Window: The LGBTQ Film & Video Festival," to be held at the Cable Car Cinema in Providence, RI, April 7-10, 2005.

"Queer Window: The LGBTQ Film & Video Festival" will bring a number of the latest and most interesting films and videos treating queer issues and communities (including work that questions the very meaning of "queer issues and communities"). In other words, while the festival is committed to screening work by, about, and/or of interest to the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer community, we do not presume (nor do we seek) narrowly to define what that work must be. Rather, the festival is interested in exploring the multiple ways in which technologies of vision and visibility intersect with discourses of sexuality and identity — particularly because the notion of "visibility" has been so central to LGBTQ politics, communities, and cultural productions. The festival will thus aim to expand the notion of what "gay and lesbian" film (or even "queer film") means and to survey the many diverse and exciting ways in which film and video representations intersect with sexuality and sexual identity, providing a forum for considering these intellectual and creative questions and a showcase for some of the most innovative work in this area.

With this goal in mind, the festival includes a mix of films and videos; documentary, narrative, and experimental pieces; feature-length and short-form texts; and work produced in the U.S. as well as from other countries. There will be a wide range of material designed to appeal to a wide-ranging audience and to dovetail not only with Brown and RISD's "Pride Month" but with the many exciting events produced by and for the LGBTQ community in Providence, Rhode Island, and New England as a whole. Indeed, we hope that the festival can help to build bridges between the multiple and heterogeneous communities interested in issues of sexuality and representation — between academics, artists, and activists; between campus-based and city, state, and regional associations; and between people of all genders, generations, orientations, and identities. We hope to see you all at the festival...where we can all see some great films and videos!
