The Rhode Island Medieval Circle Lectures

Thursday, September 14, 2006, 5:30 p.m.

Dr. Stephen A. Mitchell (Harvard University)

"Viking Age Tales of Adventure and History "

This is the first of the two lectures as part of the Viking Conference (Sep. 14-17) organized by the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology. Medieval Icelandic sagas relate stories of daring Viking exploits, including journeys of exploration from Russian to North America. This talk will revisit Icelandic sagas treating Viking Age travels east and west, in particular, the Saga of Yngvar the Wide-Traveled and the so-called Vineland Sagas, seeking to tease the history of Adventures from these enigmatic sources.

Reception to follow.

Co-sposored with the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology.

Wednesday, October 4, 5:15 pm

Eustratios Papaioannou (Brown University)

"Eros, Rhetoric and Performance: The Myrrha Story

in Twelfth-century Constantinople"
