Xenopus laevis

The Mowry lab's favorite organism is the South African clawed frog, Xenopus laevis. Xenopus is a classic developmental model used by early embryologists, and more recently has found an important role in the molecular biology field. The frogs are not only hardy and easy to raise in a laboratory setting, but their oocytes and eggs are quite large and easy to manipulate.
