Matt Leder, Teaching Associate
A native North Carolinian, Matt is very active teaching and performing. He is currently: a Trumpet Instrumentalist with Navy Band Northeast (member of the “Top Brass Quintet”), Adjunct Faculty at: Brown University, the Community College of Rhode Island, South Piedmont Community College (NC, Online Music Instructor), and St. George's School; has a private teaching studio, freelances (also a member of the "Jazz Educator's Orchestra", Berklee College of Music), and is an active member of ITG and IAJE.
He and his family moved to Rhode Island from New Orleans, where he had the opportunity to study with such Jazz greats as Ellis Marsalis, Terence Blanchard, Irvin Mayfield, Clyde Kerr, and many others. He holds a MM (Jazz Studies) from the University of New Orleans (former “Louis Armstrong Quintet” member) and a BM (Jazz Performance) from East Carolina University.
Matt has a wide variety of experiences including: selection for the International Association of Jazz Educators All Star Collegiate Big Band; performances at Carnegie Hall, Birdland and Symphony Hall; a Theater stint in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina (shows with Steve Gatlin and the stars of the Lawrence Welk show); as well as appearances in Down Beat, All Hands, and ITG Journal.
It is Matt's hope that his students will develop an appreciation of Jazz and perform at the highest levels of musical excellence. He also hopes to bring Jazz awareness to the Community at large with his own practice. He is committed, passionate, and diligent about taking his art to the highest levels while providing for his family.
