Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery | GYN Oncology | Maternal Fetal Medicine

Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship

The newest American Board of Gynecologists (ABOG) sanctioned subspecialty in Obstetrics and Gynecology is Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. The Center for Women's Surgery is the Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery Division at Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island. The Division serves as a tertiary care center for patients referred for problems of support to the female pelvis and the associated bowel and bladder dysfunction that often accompany these support failures.

The fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery is a 36-month program.  During this time fellows have rotations in Urology (2 months), Colorectal Surgery (2 months), and Gastroenterology for Women (1-2 months).  There is also opportunity to obtain additional research training through the Division of Research.  Research time is scheduled weekly, as well as the three months prior to completion of the third year, in order to complete the final writing of the fellowship thesis and paper for publication.  Fellows actively participate in the education of the residents and medical students at Women & Infants Hospital.  They are encouraged to attend all of the Medical Education Conferences, Grand Rounds, and Team Chief Conferences.  In addition, the Fellows and Chief Resident on rotation present topics in Urogynecology at the monthly noontime Urogynecology conference and weekly Urogynecology Teaching Grand Rounds.

The Center for Women's Surgery at Women & Infants Hospital receives referrals from over 550 physicians' offices leading to experience to a wide variety of conditions. A full range of therapeutic modalities is offered at the Center, including behavior modification and pharmacological therapy, as well as surgery. A collaborative approach with the referring physician is an integral part of the therapeutic decision-making for each patient.

Gyn Oncology Fellowship

"What would you want done for your loved ones under the same circumstances and/or the framing question...can we do more?" Through its volume and diversity, Gyn Oncology at Women & Infants provides the fellows with broad exposure to gynecologic malignancies. Ample opportunity for performing radical pelvic surgery and managing GI, urologic, and vascular problems caused by gyn cancer, or its treatment, is present. Most importantly, the experience of selecting the appropriate treatment to recommend to patients, based on the nuances of their specific disease, is provided.

Experience in both outpatient and inpatient chemotherapy is another strength of the program. The fellow is totally/completely integrated into The Team which plans and implements this treatment. Since the outpatient chemotherapy unit is located proximate to the clinic, the environment is designed to foster natural "impromptu" discussions and participation in treatment in a culture concerned with quality-of-care and quality-of-life.

The Gyn Oncology program participates in a fully-approved residency program in obstetrics and gynecology, as well as all the relevant disciplines at the Brown University Medical School. The systems for clinical care and education have been well established and are effective for all concerned -- including the teaching of residents. The Program has previously trained post-doctorate physicians and is dedicated to teaching at the highest level. Brown University and its affiliated hospitals offer capabilities for complex research, and the Program's high patient and surgical volume allow fulfillment of a comprehensive educational mission. Women's oncology is becoming the heart of a cancer care network encompassing southern New England. Our healthcare-model has led us to become the region's oncology leader with a bright and compelling future.

MFM Fellowship Details

Fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine

Women and Infant’s Hospital is a tertiary care center serving southeast New England. There are 9000+ deliveries per year. The Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine manages an average of 750 antenatal admissions, provides 500+ consults (inpatient and outpatient) for regional practitioners per year, and performs over 13,000 imaging studies annually. The Prenatal Diagnosis Center supports genetic counseling and outpatient antenatal diagnostic services. Over 6000 patients receive care annually at this center. Services include genetic counseling, level II ultrasounds, fetal well-being testing, fetal echocardiography, amniocentesis, fetal surgery, PUBS and CVS.

Fellows devote 15 months of their fellowship learning the clinical skills required of a MFM sub-specialist. Their training is guided by the MFM faculty. This experience provides our fellows an opportunity to become technically skilled, superbly trained sub-specialists and consultants. This clinical exposure is balanced by an intellectual atmosphere consisting of a formal MFM didactic series, together with regular perinatal, genetics and pathology conferences, as well as coursework opportunities.

The research resources available to the fellow are similarly impressive, and fellows devote 21 of their 36 months with us to developing an expertise in clinical and/or basic investigation. The research infrastructure at Women & Infants is supported by three Federal Grants, a COBRE award in Reproductive Biology, WRHR (Women’s Reproductive Health Research) and a BIRWCH in Women’s Health. All three grants provide support for development of junior faculty as well as for basic infrastructure. Our affiliation with Brown University and Rhode Island Hospital provides additional research support and possibilities for interdisciplinary research. The MFM division participates in the Maternal Fetal Medicine Units Network and the Stillbirth Collaborative Research Network (SCRN) sponsored by the NICHD. The research interests of our faculty include exercise physiology, diabetic fetopathy, epidemiology and treatment of GDM, health management, fetal/neonatal endocrinology, reproductive immunology, IUGR, hemodynamics of hypertension and cervical physiology. Research interests outside the expertise of the Division are also fostered, with the collaborative efforts of Anesthesiology, Pediatrics and Pathology producing an outstanding opportunity.
