Women’s Health Research Concentration

PGY1

  • Residents would self identify as being interested in pursuing the women’s health research (WHR) track

  • Submit application including

    • Letter of intent/personal statement describing what they want to pursue within women’s health, how this would help them in their future ambitions and what their future plans are. 

    • Model application after the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar Program application

  • Application presented to selection committee

    • One resident would be chosen as the women’s health research track resident

 PGY2

  • Elective time scheduled so that the WHR is able to participate in the Division of Research Fellow’s Course in Clinical Research Design (last two weeks in July)

  • Intensive research schedule at the same time to construct a research proposal in conjunction with mentorship

  • Expected to present their research proposal to the women’s health research group

  • Present Research Proposal at Grand Rounds

  • Protocol development

  • IRB submission

  • Data collection/data entry

PGY3

  • Completion of the project

    • Data collection

    • Data entry

    • Analysis

  • Present completed project to Women’s Health Research Group

  • Present at Resident Research Day

  • Abstract prepared for submission to a national meeting (ex. ACOG, ASRM, SMFM, APHA)

 PGY4

  • Manuscript preparation and submission

  • Write a proposal for next steps in their research agenda

  • Grand Rounds presentation on a women’s health topic

    • Hopefully be inclusive of their area of research

Other opportunities

  • Participation in the women’s health research group

  • Brown Faculty Development Seminars

  • Travel to professional meetings geared towards research or public health interests (ex.  if they are pursuing a project on maternal child health, that they would go to a conference that focused on maternal child health epidemiology or public policies)

  • Funds for research (through Medical Education)

  • PGY2 and PGY3 expected to spend elective time pursuing expectations of the women’s health track

  • PGY4 expected to spend 3-4 weeks (1-2 flexible days per week on the Gyn rotation) pursuing the women’s health track requirements

  • Mentorship

  • Exposure to Department of Public Health

    • Office of Women’s Health Advisory Committee

    • Primary Care Advisory Committee

    • Other policy oriented committees

  • Exposure to other policy related programs such as the Attorney General’s Task Force to End Sexual Violence

Expected Outcomes

  • By the middle of the third year the resident will make application to a post-residency training fellowship (e.g., RWJ, BIRCH, etc), if that is the track the resident plans to pursue.

  • It is expected that the resident will pursue an academic career, and that the resident should be pursuing this career during the third year and certainly by the fourth year.

  • The resident will have a paper accepted for publication by graduation.
