The Department's placement officer offers information and advice, in writing and in meetings, about all aspects of the job search, when students prepare to seek academic employment. Mock interviews are arranged, and faculty members travel to the meetings of the American Philosophical Association, to be available for advice and help on the spot. Here below is an account of the Department's placement record.

Of the seventy-six philosophers who have earned their Ph.D. in our department in the last fifteen years, sixty-three have found full-time positions at colleges or universities upon graduation. The remaining thirteen have found temporary part-time positions, such as an Instructorship here at Brown, or have turned to other endeavors, such as further study in a law school or in a cognitive science program, an administrative position at a college, and computer analyst positions. Those who have found full-time positions in philosophy went, in chronological order, to the following institutions (with occasionally the same graduate later going from one full-time position to a second or even a third):
