The Brown University Residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery was started in 1963 and is the oldest Plastic Surgery training program in New England. We have been approved to become an integrated program starting with interns entering in 2012. There are two plastic surgery residents per year, based at Rhode Island Hospital (RIH) but also serving Hasbro Children's Hospital, Women & Infants Hospital, and the Veterans' Administration Hospital (VAMC). In addition, residents spend time operating at two outpatient surgicenters.
Residents at Brown University are part of an academic medical community. At the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University there are nearly 400 residents and fellows and over 2,500 medical faculty representing 12 clinical departments based at 7 affiliated hospitals. As a resident in Plastic Surgery, you would have access to the facilities at Brown's picturesque Ivy League campus, located on the east side of Providence, while your clinical training would take place primarily at Rhode Island Hospital's 66-acre campus in the nearby south side of Providence.
The residency program is very busy and clinically diverse, serving one of the largest patient populations in the country. Our emergency department sees nearly 200,000 patients per year including referrals from 12 regional medical centers in 3 states. Rhode Island Hospital is the only level 1 trauma center in southern New England. In addition, Women & Infants Hospital has the 7th largest obstetrical service in the US with 9,000 deliveries per year. This provides a broad patient base for our Pediatric/Craniofacial, Hand, Adult Reconstructive, and Cosmetic services.
At the last ACGME review, the program was fully accredited for 6 years, and approved for integration starting with interns entering in 2012.
