The
Brown University Residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
was started in 1963 and is the oldest Plastic Surgery training
program in New England. It is based at Rhode Island Hospital
(RIH) but serves the Providence Veteran's Hospital (VAMC)
as well. The plastic surgery residents (two
per year) rotate through both hospitals during the last two
years of their residency.
Physicians in training at
Brown University/Rhode Island Hospital are part of an academic
medical community. At the Brown Medical School there are 1,500
medical faculty representing 12 clinical departments based
at its affiliated hospitals. As a resident in Plastic
Surgery you would have access to the facilities at Brown's
picturesque Ivy League campus, located on the east side of
Providence, while your clinical training would take place
primarily at Rhode Island Hospital's 66-acre campus in nearby
South Providence. A thriving academic medical center which
employs more than 370 doctors in training each year, the Rhode
Island Hospital's campus was expanded to include
the new Hasbro Children's Hospital in 1994, as well as a new
ambulatory surgery center, a new medical office building, and
a recently completed new emergency room and parking garage just opened in April 2005.
The residency program is
very busy and quite diversified clinically, with over 4500
OR cases per year. Dr.Albert Oh is the director of Craniofacial/Cleft surgery, and he and Dr. Patrick Sullivan run the Craniofacial/Maxillofacial
Service, combining general and otolaryngological backgrounds
with craniofacial fellowships for in-depth expertise in the
treatment of traumatic and congenital deformities of the head
and neck. Drs. Lee Edstrom, Richard Zienowicz, and Scott Schmidt manage a busy Hand and Microvascular Service at RIH, and Dr. Zienowicz is well known for his work in breast reconstruction and body contouring. Drs. Edstrom, Sullivan, and Zienowicz all have cosmetic surgery practices as well.
The Department is rounded out by the busy and diversified
practices of Drs. Lawrence Bowen and David Barrall.
At the last review the program
was fully accredited through the year 2012. All eight faculty
members participate in the teaching of the residents and medical
students, including numerous conferences and patient rounds.
