Located on the campus of Rhode Island Hospital, the Plastic Surgery administrative office provides a full range of technical assistance, including: computers, a digital scanner, photocopy and fax machines, an extensive library, including a video instructional series, and a full-time staff, all contributing to making the staff and residents' lives comfortable and productive. Up-to-date utilization of technology is evidenced by access to the Internet and Plastic Surgery on-line services, Medline (Pubmed), along with a host of other electronic journals and resources.

Residents are given full support for digital photography, with innovative archiving and retrieval resources accessible throughout the institution.

The Peters Health Sciences Library, located on the RIH campus, houses an extensive collection of medical books and journals, CD-ROM databases, and offers complete computer literature search capabilities. House officers hold academic appointments to the Brown Medical School, which entitle them to use the full spectrum of the University's educational and athletic facilities. The Gerry House is a five-story building on the RIH campus which is reserved for the use of house officers, medical students, and other qualified individuals as an on-call facility or residence dormatory for visitors. Also in the Gerry House is the RIH Fitness Center, which offers members a variety of modern fitness equipment as well as squash and racquetball courts. On-campus day care is available at the Rhode Island Hospital Guild Day Care Center, run by Bright Horizons Children's Center, Inc.

Operating Rooms

RIH has 18 in-patient operating suites, 10 of which are in the brand new Bridge Building, one floor above the new Emergency Department. The Hasbro Children's Hospital has five pediatric operating rooms, specially designed for the needs of children, and adjacent to the pediatric emergency department and the adult OR's. Eight outpatient surgery suites are located in the newly constructed Ambulatory Surgery Center, located in the Cooperative Care and Medical Office Center complex.

The private Dudley Street Operatory, incorporated in the Plastic Surgery Suite, is the site of most cosmetic and hand procedures, and operated by members of the Plastic Surgery faculty.

Emergency Medicine

RIH's emergency department is the region's verified Level 1 trauma center, calling for the best and most expert staff and equipment to be on hand 24 hours a day. With more than 125,000 visits a year, the RIH emergency department is the busiest in New England, and ranks among the 12 busiest in the country. The department is located in the new Bridge Building, recently opened in April 2005, a wonderful and enormous state-of-the-art facility designed to serve the needs of the region for many years to come. It is located directly under the new operating room suite, with a direct access trauma elevator available for immediate access.

Hasbro Children's Hospital

Hasbro Children's Hospital (HCH), the region's premiere pediatric facility, is the pediatric division of Rhode Island Hospital. With 87 beds, HCH admits some 6,000 inpatients each year. HCH offers the area's only pediatric intensive care unit and pediatric oncology program, has separate emergency and surgical units, and operates numerous specialty clinics which log 30,000 visits each year. HCH has four pediatric operating rooms, located adjacent to the Davol Building operating rooms. The hospital is located in a new, seven-story building opened in 1994, and boasts artwork, fountains, an aquarium and many other unique features to delight children and adults. Designed in collaboration with physicians, staff, parents and children, HCH has earned worldwide acclaim for its family-centered environment and expert staff.

The medical staff includes pediatric specialists in general surgery, neurosurgery, cardiac surgery, otolaryngology, urology and orthopaedics, as well as pediatric anesthesiologists. All of these specialist are board certified in their specialties and enhance the plastic surgery training program.

Women & Infants Hospital

Plastic Surgery staff have staff appointments at Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island, the area's referral center for reproductive and perinatal medicine and a major affiliate of the Brown Medical School. The hospital delivers 10,000 babies annually, making it the largest obstetrical service in the state, and second largest in New England. The hospital also cares for more than 1,000 critically ill newborns in its prestigious Neonatal Special Care Nursery each year. W&I is affiliated with and located adjacent to Rhode Island Hospital. Plastic Surgery staff often provide consultation and services at W&I for programs such as the hospital's gynecological tumor service.

663 bed Rhode Island Hospital is a founding partner of Lifespan, a comprehensive health system formed in 1994 with The Miriam Hospital, a 247 bed hospital located in Providence, and also a major affiliate of the Brown Medical School. Additional Lifespan partners include Newport Hospital; Bradley Hospital, a children's psychiatric hospital; VNA of Rhode Island, the area's leading home health care agency; and Hospice Care of Rhode Island, which provides palliative care for the terminally ill.
