Political Theory Project

The Political Theory Project aims to establish a small but vibrant research cluster of political theorists at Brown University, who will bring the conceptual rigor of political theory to bear on normative questions. Although diverse in its orientation, the Project is especially interested in market-based approaches to social problems.

The Political Theory Fellows-visiting scholars-will investigate the ideals of personal freedom and social accountability that underlie many contemporary global problems. Several research products will result from this group:

  • Creation of visiting fellowships to form a critical mass of political theorists working on these issues

  • Organization of a weekly Political Theory Seminar to stimulate original research among the fellows and students

  • Regular interactions between fellows and Brown faculty, undergraduate, and graduate students, especially in the Political Science and Philosophy Departments, to enhance debate on normative dimensions of global problems

  • Organization of public events/workshops to draw a variety of prominent speakers on the issues of personal freedom and political accountability to the Brown campus
