Undergraduate Program

You and Your Advisor

To obtain an advisor in the Department of Political Science, you should visit the Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS), Professor Wendy Schiller during her regular office hours (Tuesday 9:30-11:30 and Wednesday 12:30-2:30).   She will be able to talk to you about courses in the field and help in checking your fulfillment of requirements. You will then be assigned a professor in the subfield you are interested in for further academic advice on courses.

You may also email Professor Schiller at: polisciadvisor@brown.edu.

We must emphasize, the responsibility for taking initiatives is yours; your advisor will not ordinarily seek you out but will be ready with assistance as requested. The Department of Political Science recommends that you consult with your advisor at least once a semester. It is especially important to review your plans about midway through your sophomore and junior years and again very early in your senior year. Experience has shown that these are the times when students are most likely to be making decisions critical to graduation, and a timely review of these decisions can be quite helpful in avoiding mistakes.
