A History of American Fair Trade and Commerce
Date:
Thursday, April 12, 2012 - 8:00pm - 9:00pm
Location:
MacMillan 115
Speakers:
Laura Phillips Join the Janus Fellows and Professor Laura Phillips (PTP Postdoc) as she discusses her research into the varieties of American capitalism throughout American history.
Today the term "capitalism" tends to connote a monolithic system of greed and corporate big business. Prof Phillips suggests there is an important history of diversity in American capitalism that includes small proprieters concerned with ethical consumption and the bottom line. She will discuss the early 20th century origins of fair trade networks which coincided with the rise of big business in America.
