Public discussions following massacres like Sandy Hook often center around guns themselves and issues of general access to guns. However, we see a need for a serious discussion of the factors which lead people to commit such crimes. Specifically, we would like to frame this as a public health policy discussion, centering around mental health in particular. This panel discussion will address questions of gun ownership restrictions based on mental health, mental health treatment, and how does society treat and manage mentally ill persons in order to prevent outbursts such as Sandy Hook.
