Description

This program is designed to give Tougaloo College students with interests in neuroscience research the opportunity to participate in a summer program of coursework and laboratory research. Brain and Behavior Fellow(s) will take a neuroscience course for credit and will work in the laboratory of Rebecca Burwell, Associate Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience. The Fellowship will include tuition, room and board, fees, travel, and a small stipend for books and other necessities.

The research project for the summer of 2008 addresses the role of the hippocampus and related regions in processing information about the context in which events, or episodes, occur. We will use electrophysiology in behaving rats to understand how environmental stimuli are encoded in the activity of individual neurons. Each student will be supervised
by Professor Burwell and a senior graduate student or postdoctoral associated. The goal for the Fellow will be to participate in an active behavioral neuroscience research lab, to learn basic skills necessary for electrophysiology, and understand how research in animal models can help us better understand human episodic memory.

Applications for Summer 2008 are due December 15, 2007.
Dates for the Summer 2008 program are June 10 through August 10.

Courses

If funding is available, it may also be possible for Summer Fellows to take a course as well as join the lab. Courses available in the Summer of 2007 are BN0001 The Brain: An Introduction to Neuroscience and include BN0160 Experimental Neuroscience. For more information on these courses, see the links below. Students with strong biology and prior lab experience may wish to take BN0160. Less advanced students may wish to begin with the introductory BN0001.

BN0001:
The Brain: An Introduction to Neuroscience and student review.

BN0160:
Experimental Neuroscience and student review.

Who Should Apply

The ideal applicant will have substantial science coursework and an interest in a career in neuroscience research. All students interested in the brain and behavior, however, are encouraged to apply.
