Graduate Program - Introduction
The graduate program in the Department of Psychology is designed to educate and train scientists and scholars who will make contributions to society through research and teaching. Ph.D.s in Psychology from Brown are prepared for a range of scientific careers in both academic and applied settings.The Graduate Program in Psychology is designed for candidates seeking the Ph.D. degree. Some students also elect to take a Master's degree as a step toward the Ph.D., but students are not accepted for Master's level work only.
Applicants should have a good general background in psychology, including statistics and laboratory experience, familiarity with other sciences, mathematics, and some exposure to research, e.g. an undergraduate research project. A complete application requires transcripts, scores on the general Graduate Record Examination, and letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with the applicant's work. In preparing personal statements, applicants should clearly state research interests and describe prior research experience. Degrees in Psychology are currently offered with specializations in Behavioral Neuroscience, Sensation and Perception, Cognitive Processes, and Social/Developmental.
Applications for Fall admission should reach Brown by January 6. The Graduate Record Examination should be taken in November to ensure that scores reach Brown in time for consideration.
