Advising of First Year Students
Each member of the faculty advises a small number of first-year students each academic year. Students are assigned to their advisors by the office of the Dean of the College. Contact Dean Robert Shaw for further information.

Concentration Advising. One or more faculty members serve as A.B. and Sc. B. Concentration advisors each year. These advisors serve three functions. They provide general information to all interested students about the Concentrations in Psychology. These advisors are also responsible for helping concentrators develop their curricula, and they must sign all relevant concentration forms. Together, the A.B. and Sc.B. advisors form the Psychology Concentration Committee (PCC). Questions that cannot be resolved by an individual advisor (e.g., exceptions to policies stated here) are normally directed to the PCC. See the attached roster of faculty advisors for names and contact information for these advisors.
Honors Advising. The Departmental Honors Advisor is responsible for disseminating information about the Honors Program to all interested concentrators. Typically, the Honors Advisor will schedule a general organizational meeting for all prospective Honors students early in the Spring semester and again early in the Fall semester. The Honors Advisor is also available to meet with students individually when they are ready to discuss the Honors Program in more detail. The Honors Advisor is responsible for signing all Departmental forms related to the Honors Program and for scheduling students’ orals examinations at the end of their senior year. The Honors Advisor is identified on the attached list of advisors.
Pre-Clinical Advising. At Brown, students who intend to pursue careers in clinical psychology are encouraged to take advantage of the same coursework and research opportunities as do all other concentrators. This is because the best graduate programs in clinical psychology expect students to have a solid background in many of the basic areas of psychology. One or more members of the faculty serve as Clinical Advisors each year. These faculty members provide students interested in clinical psychology with information about graduate training in that field. These advisors also assist students in finding clinical internships in the Providence area.
Transfer Credits. Students with questions about transferring course credits from other institutions should contact the Transfer Credit Advisor.
