Undergraduate Program
Careers in Psychology and Related Fields
The A.B. and Sc.B. concentrations in Psychology provide students with a solid foundation on which to build careers in Psychology, Medicine, Law, and Business. The numbers given illustrate the placements of graduating concentrators in Psychology one year after their graduation. About one half of the graduating seniors were employed as research assistants, clinical interns, or in business administration. Most students in research and clinical internships take these positions in order to gain research and clinical experience that they will use when they pursue graduate training. Approximately a quarter of the graduating concentrators were in graduate programs in Psychology, medical schools, or law schools.
The diversity of career paths concentrators pursue reflects the flexibility of the A.B. and Sc.B. concentrations. Some concentrators focus on Psychology as a social science; this type of back ground can help to prepare them for careers in clinical psychology, business, policy-related research positions, law, and education. Other students focus on Psychology as a life science; this type of back ground can help to prepare them for careers in experimental psychology, medicine, and other careers as research scientists.
Students may wish to take advantage of the advising opportunities in the Department as they plan their academic careers. The A.B. and Sc.B. concentration advisors can provide students with more detailed information about graduate training and careers in Psychology. The Departmental Clinical Advisors can provide students with details on graduate training in clinical psychology and other human service fields. The Brown University Office of Career Services can provide students with broader overviews of career opportunities in Psychology and related fields.
