Undergraduate Program
Research and Tutorial Opportunities

Tutorial learning situations provide a unique kind of educational experience. By working closely with a faculty advisor on a specific project of mutual interest, students learn the special challenges and rewards of psychological research. Two courses within the department - Psychology 197 and Psychology 199 - have been designed to provide this sort of educational experience. Each of these courses is arranged with an individual faculty member and, ordinarily, a specific project is conducted by one student and one faculty member.

Psychology 197

Psychology 197 covers scholarly projects that are conducted by studying the primary literature in Psychology and related disciplines that are appropriate to a particular scholarly inquiry. There are no formal constraints on the subject matter for projects in this course; the main requirement is that students find a faculty member who is able to advise them on the chosen topic. For assistance in finding a faculty sponsor, you should consult your concentration advisor. Ideally, arrangements for this type of project should be made during the semester that is immediately prior to the one in which the work will be carried out. Psychology 197 is strongly recommended for A.B. and Sc.B. concentrators.

Psychology 199

This course gives the student an opportunity to conduct either laboratory experiments or other types of empirical research. The student and faculty member should work out the general arrangements for the research activity in the semester prior to that in which the research will be conducted. The course culminates in the writing of a substantial research report, which generally conforms to the format of some standard journal. The report should be submitted at the end of the semester during which the work is conducted and the date for submission should be established by mutual agreement early in the semester. Psychology 199 is recommended for A.B. concentrators and is required by Sc.B. concentrators.

Other Independent Research: Qualified students may also want to take advantage of other research opportunities in the Department. Each summer, several students receive Undergraduate Teaching and Research Assistantships (UTRA) from the Dean of the College. These assistantships provide students with a summer stipend while they work with one member of the faculty on either research or course development. For details, contact one of the A.B. or Sc.B. advisors.
