Content Summary
The International Institute of Rhode Island was the recipient of the largest share of Governor Donald Carcieri’s $1.4 million allocation for adult literacy programs. Based on intake interviews, performance records of students enrolled in the 2002-2003 school year, growing waitlist numbers (up to 700 per class), and significant demographic changes, the Institute believes that the state’s investment will yield a better-trained workforce, invested citizenry, and improved parenting and academic commitment. This brief report attempts to provide data to indicate progress in adult literacy as well as demonstrate the need for Carcieri’s allocation.
Major Findings
This report notes that the intake interviews of students in September indicate that they are highly motivated to achieve self-sufficiency as 71% are employed. Students tend to retain their initial motivation, a fact which ultimately benefits the state socially and economically. The attendance rate of program offerings is 76%. Student goals include: improvement in employment performance, improved communication skills, and the opportunity to obtain a GED or college degree. Adult literacy is a long-term challenge which must be met with long-term strategies and commitment.
