Katz is the author of Impressionist Subjects; Gender, Interiority, and Modernist Fiction in England (U Illinois Press, 2000), as well as a number of articles on modernist fiction. She currently directs the undergraduate Gender Studies program and is a member of the Urban Studies Program Committee at Brown, as well as the Associate Editor of the Modernist Journals Project. She is now at work on a book about modernism's use of the city and contemporary urban nostalgia.

Interests

Professor Katz works on 20th-century literature, focusing in particular on modernism, urban studies, and gender studies. Her first book, Impressionist Subjects: Gender, Interiority, and Modernist Fiction in England (Urbana: U Illinois P, 2000), examined late-19th- and early-20th-century literary impressionism, analyzing the way representations of consciousness took up broader cultural debates about private and public spheres, which changed as middle-class women moved into public life.

Her current book project, Modernism and Urban Nostalgia: Public Spaces and Public Texts, considers the way modernism casts the city as the exemplary space in which notions of public and private are refigured. It examines modernist literature and early-20th-century theories of urban life and analyzes the work done by the category of modernism in contemporary debates over a vanishing urban community. Chapters include "Documentary and the City," "Urban Nostalgia," and "Public Space, Private Memory."
