My research examines the determinants and consequences of internal and international migration in developing countries, and the determinants of fertility related behavior. I ask how do individuals respond to opportunities and constraints in places of origin and potential places of destination, what is the relative influence of background characteristics, social networks and the economic and political context on the decision to migrate and the choice of destination. My current work examines ethnic differences in migration patterns in Guatemala and the diffusion of urban demographic behavior to rural areas through return migration and migrant networks. In collaboration with Dennis Hogan, I am launching a longitudinal study of early life course transitions among adolescents in Ethiopia. I teach undergraduate and graduate courses on statistics, survey research and Mexico-U.S. migration.
