Curriculum Vitae

Areas of Interest:
My current research agenda encompasses three major projects.

1) Migration and Social Networks in South Africa: My dissertation uses event history methods to analyze nationally-representative survey data to examine the historical patterns and determinants of internal migration in South Africa, particularly focusing on the role of social networks in facilitating or hindering migration. A postdoctoral follow-up project will examine the role that migrant social networks play in local community development, using qualitative interviews with migrants, their families and communities.

2) Migration, Urbanization, Environment, and Health in Coastal Ghana:

This project with Professor Michael White and other colleagues at the Population Studies and Training Center at Brown University, the Faculty of Geography and Tourism at University of Cape Coast in Ghana, and the Graduate School of Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island explores linkages between internal migration, urbanization, environmental change, and health in coastal Ghana.  I managed fieldwork in Ghana in 2004 to collect household survey data, drinking water samples, and qualitative interviews from coastal communities around the city of Cape Coast.  I have also co-authored papers analyzing data from this project which examine the relationship between migration and fertility change, the patterns and determinants of migration in this region, and the influence of community context on health knowledge.

3) The Social Demography of Forced Migration:

I also work to promote the use of demographic analysis to better understand processes of forced migration and displacement. I am a member of the Working Group on the Demography of Armed Conflict of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population.  Additionally, I was elected to the Executive Committee of the International Association for the Study of Forced Migration and have twice organized sessions at the Population Association of America meeting on forced migration and the demography of armed conflict.  One of my research papers under review compares historical data on mortality in crises with Coale-Demeny model life tables and finds that commonly held views about who is most vulnerable in a crisis (e.g., children) are not always correct.

Papers:
Reed, Holly E. Who is Most Vulnerable? Age- and Sex-Specific Mortality Patterns in Refugee and Displaced Populations Under review.
Reed, Holly E., Catherine S. Andrzejewski, Michael J. White. Determinants of Interregional Migration in Coastal Ghana: An Event History Analysis Under review.
