Research Project:

Encounters and Enrollment: Census 2010 and Rhode Island’s Latino Community
I am currently conducting an ethnographic project on the intersections between local politics, state practice and ethnoracial categorization in Census 2010. In general terms, this project explores the encounters, practices, and dynamics between the census (as an agency, discourse, and scientific instrument) and Rhode Island’s Latina/o population. Drawing on cultural sociology, political sociology, and the sociology of science, this project pursues three major lines of inquiry: 1) examination of Bureau efforts to elicit support from local leaders through partnerships, complete count committees and other efforts; 2) interrogation of linkages between census racial and panethnic categories, identity and the politics of numeracy; and finally, 3) an analysis of the material presence and performative powers of the census and its promotional objects (t-shirts, magnets, and hats, etc).
