My research focuses mainly on the social determinants of reproductive health, and in particular the way that gender inequalities, in combination with economic and racial/ethnic inequalities, shape women and adolescent girls' risk of HIV/AIDS, gender-based violence, and maternal morbidity/mortality. I have worked with the Population Council in their Gender, Family, and Development Program on research and programs related to the transition to adulthood and to quality of reproductive health care. I have also worked with the reproductive health NGO EngenderHealth, on a qualitative study examining social vulnerability to obstetric fistula in Tanzania and on a large-scale baseline survey in in Bolivia examining quality of maternal health, family planning, and post-abortion care services. I have conducted research in Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, and Tanzania. I am currently working at Brown with Professor Susan Short on a project examining the relationship between parental death and child well-being in the context of HIV/AIDS in southern Africa.
