Undergraduate Advising & Mentoring

The Sociology department offers some of the best opportunities at Brown for close interaction between students and professors. Upon registering for the concentration, each student will be assigned to an advisor who will help them work out their program. We encourage students to select their own advisor, but if they do not know a faculty member whose interests match theirs, we will help them locate the right person. The Undergraduate Committee of the department assists students in locating the appropriate match with faculty.

In addition to the student's own advisor, the Concentration Advisor is readily available to assist students in course planning and planning for future careers or graduate study.

As a university college, Brown has the capacity to forge intellectual collegial relationships between graduate students and undergraduate concentrators. We will match up each concentrator in their junior and senior year with one or more graduate students. The selection will be based on common interests, as well as personal experience (e.g., the undergraduate had the graduate student as a TA). The match-up will be coordinated by the Graduate Advisor and Undergraduate Advisor. These mentorships may take a variety of forms: assistance with formulating a research topic, joint research in a seminar or independent study, accompaniment to a scholarly conference, informal discussions, invitation to attend departmental lectures.
