DISCUSSION GROUPS, SHARING SESSIONS

Beginning last spring, and continuing into the fall, sharing sessions have been held for practitioners with an interest in ESOL, intergenerational learning, learning disabilities and general adult education practice. In addition to these sessions, a new group is being formed to address concerns around women in adult education. (see below). The Literacy Assistance Center in New York holds a monthly practitioners writing group which is described as an "opportunity for teachers, program managers, counselors and others to focus on their own writing, professional or personal." Practitioners are invited to meet monthly to "write, share, and give feedback in a support environment." Would this be of interest to any of us? A first meeting will be held later this month; please contact LR/RI if this interests you.

Practitioner, Learner Assistance Needed for Adult Education Research Projects

Victoria Purcells-Gates and Rima E. Rudd, researchers from the National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy, seek assistance from area adult education practitioners and learners. Purcells-Gates is conducting a study to document everyday uses of reading and writing by adult literacy learners and look for possible relationships between program characteristics and changes in everyday uses of print. She seeks practitioners who will: answer interview questions re program content, activities, and materials; allow class observation by NCSALL researchers; help recruit student volunteers for home visits (visits to occur every six months and include a 45 minute structured interview), and help recruit local researchers (i.e. other teachers or administrators) for home visits. Rudd's study explores mutual benefits of introducing health topics into adult education classes. She would like to hear from practitioners who have introduced health topics into their curricula, and will be conducting a formal survey this fall.

Practitioners interested in assisting in either project or would simply like to read a project overview can contact David Hayes, RI PDRN Practitioner Leader, (401) 331-9261 or email DHayes4663@aol.com.

NCSALL is also working on a motivation study,'which will present a comprehensive picture of factors that work against or support adult learners1 motivation to persist in Basic Literacy, ABE and ASE/GED programs. NCSALL is looking for a combination of 10-15 rural and urban programs from each New England state to work with. The study involves interviews with learners, with questions focused to identify the factors that influence learner persistence in programs. The students to be interviewed would ideally comprise a combination of 3 levels: Basic literacy (0-4), ABE (5-8), and GED/ASE students born in this country. Learners participating in interviews will be compensated $10, paid in cash after each interview. Programs must commit to a one hour presentation/class lesson on motivation to introduce the participating class to the topic, and two 20-30 minute interviews to be held with each learner in the participating class/es: one this fall and one next spring. An optional follow-up session may be held with the program to discuss the study's findings. To learn more, or to participate in the study, please contact LR/RI.

Connecting Practitioners to Research - An Introduction to NCSALL and the PDRN

David Hayes will present an introduction to NCSALL and its efforts to link research and practice through the Practitioner Dissemination and Research Network (PDRN). The 60-75 minute presentation will highlight current NCSALL research, results of practitioner focus groups recently conducted in Rhode Island and seven other states on the theme of connecting research and practice, and the development and function of the PDRN/RI. A discussion on NCSALL and ways in which the PDRN can facilitate meaningful connections between practitioners and research will follow. The presentation will be offered on four different dates:

  • Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 2:00 PM
  • Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 6:00 PM
  • Thursday, Oct. 23 at 2:00 PM
  • Friday, Oct. 24 at 6:00 PM.
All sessions will be held at the Howard Swearer Center for Public Service at Brown University, 25 George St., Providence. Anyone wishing to attend should contact David Hayes, NCSALL Rhode Island Practitioner Leader, at (401) 331-9261 or by email at

PDRN RI@aol.com for more information.
