Family Literacy and Early Childcare Providers: Providence Public Library is Celebrating Reading is Fun Week: May 9 — 15. We invite YOU and your early learners to join in the fun! What is Reading is Fun Week? Reading is Fun Week (annually, the second full week of May - this year May 9–15, 2010) is sponsored by Reading is Fundamental (RIF), the nation's oldest and largest non-profit literacy organization. Educators have had this national event to promote literacy since 1979. Traditionally, the week has been designated to highlight the importance and fun of reading and has included reading motivation, family and community involvement, and free book distribution through RIF. more info: http://www.rif.org. What is the Library doing? Providence Public Library is inviting Rhode Island preschool and kindergarten teachers and children to celebrate reading and have some fun with our free LARK kits (Learning and Reading Kits). These thematic kits of library materials (more than 80 themes in all, some in Spanish) come packaged in a plastic tub or tote bag and contain 10 books, music, an activity folder full of ideas, and materials for hands-on fun and interactive exploration, including: puppets, flannel boards, games, puzzles, toys, costumes, posters and much more! Save the date: Skills2Compete Day at the State House on May 20, 2010 2:30-4:30pm  learning opportunities The Childhood Lead Action Project is a statewide organization working to eliminate childhood lead poisoning through education, parent support, and advocacy. With the support of a recent EPA grant, the Childhood Lead Action Project has developed a comprehensive lead poisoning prevention ESL curriculum to help ESL providers to supply their clients with important information to keep themselves and their families safe. The Childhood Lead Action Project is making this curriculum available to ESL providers throughout the state. In addition to the ESL curriculum, the Childhood Lead Action Project also provides free trainings, seminars and workshops on lead poisoning prevention, and tenants' rights. Each video is about 30 minutes in length and uses classroom footage and instructor interview footage to illustrate topics in adult ESOL practice such as approaches to teaching each of the four skills, planning lessons, working with emergent literacy learners, and grammar and vocabulary development in context. All the videos will be available free of charge online, or DVDs can be purchased for a minimal cost-recovery fee. People can access and utilize the videos to suit their training needs: as self-access resources, incorporated in workshops or volunteer trainings, as part of online training or teacher education courses, etc. The first two videos are now ready for viewing at http://www.newamericanhorizons.org. Building Literacy with Adult Emergent Readers focuses on a whole-part-whole approach to working with emergent literacy learners and Lesson Planning for Life Skills provides an overview of general lesson planning principles. PRACC is particularly interested in issues such as high classroom turnover/mobility and its disproportionate impact on low-income, minority, and farm worker students. Research Assistant, Bilingual Spanish-English The Research Assistant, under the general supervision of the Evaluation Coordinator, will carry out data collection activities as a member of a team evaluating community change in four Providence neighborhoods. The Research Assistant will conduct interviews (in school or possibly in the home) with parents of children in school-and agency- based programs, organize and staff (approximately 4) focus groups, transcribe and translate interview data. The Research Assistant will participate in qualitative/quantitative analyses of data and will review relevant literature to gather information and may participate in development of research protocols. Requirements: Graduate student or degree in education, sociology, social work or related field with previous qualitative/quantitative research experience. Excellent English/Spanish interpersonal skills necessary. The ability to work independently and maintain regular communication with consulting team a must. Flexible schedule; car very helpful; some work from home possible. 10-15 hour per week position to begin May 2010 and currently funded through November 2010.
