How / Can goal setting enhance learner participation and commitment to a program?
Doreen Perry, Instructor, Project Opportunity/Project RIRAL,Woonsocket, RI
I am currently teaching a Project Opportunity class for Project RIRAL in Woonsocket, RI. I use a project based instruction model that focuses on readying students for the workplace. The program uses SCANS-enriched material emphasizing teamwork, group activities, social skills, and team and organizational skills, with little emphasis placed on traditional academics. I believe goal setting is an important skill for these learners as they begin career investigation. In addition, my learners have indicated a desire to increase their math skills to enhance their employment marketability and for personal self-improvement. Therefore, I want to examine, in a systematic fashion, if goal setting, both individual and as a group, will enhance learner participation and commitment to the program.
I plan to implement the following:
Evaluation will include pre- and post- inquiry assessment and anecdotal information from student and professional journals.
Evaluation Tools: CASAS work-related pre- and post- tests
Student self-evaluation
I will present this at the general sharing session in June 2001. I will also make arrangements to disseminate the information to other Project Opportunity practitioners, through the RI Literacy Resources Network, and to the Project RIRAL staff.
