Our work in Art and Society seeks to better connect the arts with various communities and to introduce those who have been traditionally excluded from the arts to the practices of art production and appreciation. Programs work in a variety of media; many are interdisciplinary, breaking boundaries between art and education, health and community development.

Community Outreach through the Performing Arts (COPA) uses the arts to build community through after-school classes at Providence Housing Authority sites. Teams teach workshops in creative writing, dance, theater, and the visual arts. With the conviction that effective teaching is an art form, volunteers work as a community of learning teachers. contact: Dilania Inoa

Space in Prison for the Arts and Creative Expression (SPACE) is a partnership with the Women's and Men's Divisions of the RI Adult Correctional Institute (ACI). Volunteers and inmates explore the arts as a medium for expression, fun, and reflection. Teams of volunteers conduct evening workshops in creative writing, movement, and theater. Writers' Groups offer developmentally disabled adults at Blackstone Valley Industries a forum to engage in creative writing and to practice literacy skills. Brown students facilitate weekly writing workshops, and the group produces and annual journal and hosts a reading on the Brown campus. contact: Kate Leaird
