procedure 1. Explain the format of the class, the schedule, and hand out your phone numbers to learners. See if they have any questions about the way the class will be run. 2. Establish class guidelines on using other languages. (always? sometimes? never?) when is it important to be able to use the first language in the class, when is it not useful?

Activity and estimated time: Goal-setting brainstorm and dot vote, 30-40 minutes

materials Butcher paper, markers, dot stickers, goal-setting checklist (See ŚMethodsą drawer, resource library, for examples.)
procedure 1. Have people brainstorm individually for five to ten minutes all the places and scenarios where they need English. 2. Re-group. Learners call out different places, you write responses on board. Use goal-setting checklists as catalysts or follow up in case people are hesitant. 3. Each person gets 2 dots with which to vote, placing them by the 2 most important places. 4. Look at the results as a class and see which will get top priority.

evaluation This is helpful because you are deciding up front, as a class, what your syllabus will look like. Tell people it is flexible and they should feel free to add to the list as the semester goes on. There are also goal-setting checklists that ask more specifically about how comfortable people feel in different scenarios. You can also use these for a follow-up to get a sense of where people. See the Methods drawer.
