The People’s School Project Student Internship, Spring 2008

If you are looking for an opportunity to become more involved with issues that are relevant to Providence and would like to develop relationships with residents and non-profit organizations engaged in innovative, creative, community work, this may be the internship you are looking for.

The People’s School connects local Providence residents with traditionally and formally trained artist educators, who teach art classes involving a variety of mediums. Participants learn to make art that reflects their own “stories”, facilitating intercultural understanding, self-awareness, and economic enterprise. Local artists, craftspeople, arts educators and businesspeople teach participants to master the necessary skills to produce art products, of high quality, and to develop business skills to distribute them via micro-businesses that support economic self-sufficiency and/or social justice issues.

With resources being provided by Social Venture Partners of RI http://www.svpri.org/, the People’s School just recently entered into collaboration with Rhode Island for Community & Justice (RICJ), another local non-profit organization, to create a jewelry product line based on the tiles and message of the Wall of Hope, a public art project commemorating the victims of 9-11. These tiles are currently on display along the waterfront in Providence, and on the Providence Journal Bulletin building. This initiative would be part of an effective fund-raising strategy for RICJ and the first public demonstration of a People’s School class.

The Swearer Center for Public Service is assisting in the development and implementation of this project and is seeking a student intern to aid in the planning and development process for 5 to 10 hours per week. The student will be responsible for the following:

  • Attend and participate in planning meetings on campus and in the community
  • Record and maintain minutes to document progress and follow-up
  • Provide assistance with follow-up, including scheduling and networking
  • Attend and participate in advisory board meetings
  • Identify campus resources
  • Make recommendations for possible student roles in project implementation and/or development
  • Other responsibilities as needed

Interested students should complete the application and return to Claudia DeCesare at the Swearer Center for Public Service, or via e-mail at Claudia_DeCesare@brown.edu. Position is open immediately and will be closed when position is filled. Potential for continuation into the summer.
