The Merasi School

Region/Community: The Merasi, a community of marginalized, impoverished lower caste musicians in the northwestern Indian state of Rajasthan.

Description: I started working with The Merasi on a variety of musical preservation projects in 2004. I quickly realized that these initiatives were not addressing the larger issue of total social marginalization. In conversations with the community, they identified education as the most systemic means of creating access to social, economic, and political opportunity. So was born The Merasi School.
