Street Sights Newspaper

Region/Community: homeless population in Providence

Description: Street Sights is a street newspaper about homelessness issues in the greater Providence area. The staff includes students, homeless and formerly homeless individuals, and community members. We aim to increase communication about a topic that is often ignored, and create an environment where people can feel empowered to make change in their lives and the community around them. We distribute 2000 copies of the paper each month to shelters, soup kitchen, non-profits, politicians, media-sources, bookstores, and more.

WRNI "This I Believe" (April 30, 2008)

From Elizabeth:
Last March, the state closed Welcome Arnold, Rhode Island's largest homeless shelter. On the day of the closing, many of the 100+ residents still did not know where they would sleep that night. At this time, a group of students, homeless individuals, and advocates came together to re-start Street Sights in an effort to promote open and honest dialogue in the homeless community.
