U.S. Campaign for Burma & Cycle for Schools

Region/Community this project works with:Burma (Myanmar), High school students in United States

From Pat: In the summer of 2006, I bicycled 2,800 miles through southeast Asia and raised $22,500 to build schools in Laos and Cambodia.

After returning to the United States in October 2006, I took a year off from Brown to speak at 40 high schools and universities across the country about my trip.

In January 2007, I created a non-profit called Transform Abroad. Transform Abroad sends low-income high school students abroad to volunteer in a developing countries during the summer. Last summer, we sent 6 students abroad.

During my bike trip, I spent a month in Burma. Since my return from Burma, I have been working with a group called the US Campaign for Burma, an advocacy organization in Washington DC dedicated to bringing human rights, democracy, and freedom to the country. Officially, I am the Northeast Regional Student Coordinator, but I also fundraise, work on policy issues, and take part in strategic planning for the organization. Over the past 18 months, I have raised $75,000 for the organization and published articles on Burma in places like the Providence Journal. I am planning to join the Board of Directors of US Campaign for Burma when I graduate in May.

Along with Nat Manning, I am the co-founder of the Green Voyage.. We are planning to leave for our round-the-world journey in the fall of 2008.
