Scholarships for Service
Description
If you are engaged in service work in Rhode Island and/or eligible for work study, you could qualify for an additional $1,000 in federal scholarship funding. Scholarships for Service (SFS) is an AmeriCorps program that recognizes students who are engaged in community work. SFS runs both an Academic Year term and Summer term during the year where college students can serve their local community.
Eligibility/Selection Criteria
To be eligible, you must perform 300 hours of community service by September 5, 2010. Your work-study hours can count toward the total, however this opportunity is not limited to work-study eligible students. If you are involved in unpaid service work in the areas of education, health, advocacy, or literacy, you can also apply to receive the award.
Benefit
Members who successfully complete the program (by serving 300 hours and meeting general program requirements) are eligible to receive a $1,000 AmeriCorps Education Award. Education Awards can be used to repay qualified student loans, to pay all or part of the cost of attending a qualified institution of higher education, or to pay expenses incurred while participating in approved school-to-work programs.
Applying
To participate, you will need to fill out a short application, which may be submitted with your federal off-campus work study application if you are applying in conjunction with work-study. You will also be asked to attend a short orientation meeting. For more information, download an information sheet and an application.
