Community Fellows Program

For twenty years the Swearer Center has been guided by an understanding that community work must be built on collaboration and partnership. We approach our community partners with respect and cooperation, attempting to jointly define, implement and evaluate our efforts. As we convene students and faculty for dialogue, education and scholarship, and as we focus resources on community issues, we are keenly aware of how much we depend on the expertise and knowledge of our community partners to shape and guide our work.

In recognition of the rich resources of the Rhode Island community, the skill and expertise of many community professionals, and the strong partnerships that have been established between the Swearer Center and community organizations, the Swearer Center has established the Community Fellows Program.

Swearer Community Fellows are selected annually for their expertise, ability to advise students, faculty and staff, and willingness to deepen the community context of the work of the Swearer Center. Fellows may be asked to be available to serve many roles at the Center and University, which might include:

  • Advise Swearer staff on program development
  • Consult and collaborate with faculty on academic courses and community-based research
  • Participate in Swearer advising projects – UCAAP, Careers in the Common Good
  • Help develop and offer training for students
  • Participate in public presentations, seminars and conferences
  • Formulate policy and advocacy initiatives that might engage university community
