Lecture on Race, Gender, and the New Biopolitics of Medical Research
Professor Steven Epstein of the Sociology department at the University of California at San Diego will present "Inclusion and Difference: Gender, Race and the New Biopolitics of Medical Research" in the first floor Taubman Center seminar room at 12:30 p.m., Monday, December 3. The lecture is co-sponsored by the Committee on Science and Technology Studies and the Taubman Center for Public Policy.
Professor Epstein is director of the Science Studies Program at the University of California , San Diego . His most recent book, Inclusion: The Politics of Difference in Medical Research ( Univ. of Chicago Press , 2007) received the Robert K. Merton Professional Award from the American Sociological Association. His first book, Impure Science: AIDS, Activism and the Politics of Knowledge (Univ. of California Press,1996) was a recipient of the Merton award, along with the C. Wright Mills award and the Rachel Carson book prize. His areas of interest include sociology of biomedicine, health and illness, of science and scientific knowledge, as well as gender, sexuality, race and biomedicine.
