CAROLYN ADAMS
CAROLYN ADAMS, Curator of The American Dance Legacy Institute, was a
principal dancer with the Paul Taylor Dance Company from 1965 to 1982, and
created roles in such Taylor masterpieces as Esplanade, Big Bertha, and
Arden Court. In addition to Esplanade, she is perhaps most remembered for
her performances in Taylor's classic, Aureole, which she performed
throughout the world with Mr.Taylor and with Rudolf Nureyev in his 1975
season of NUREYEV AND FRIENDS in New York City. Ms. Adams teaches at The
Juilliard School, and is Artistic Director of The New York State Summer
School of the Arts School of Dance. She further serves the professional
dance community as a board member of Dance Theatre Workshop and The Parsons
Dance Company She was Chairperson of the Dance/USA Task Force on Dance
Education, was Education Director for the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival
>from 1991-1995, and directed the BFA Dance Program at The City College of
New York. In 1973 she co-founded the Harlem Dance Foundation, a community
based arts facility and has spent the past 20 years creating and developing
dance and multi arts projects and curricula with a focus on issues in
professional training. Ms. Adams is the author of many articles on dance
and related topics, and is a frequent lecturer and arts consultant. She is
listed in Who's in America. With her sister, Julie Adams Strandberg, she
co-authored American Education and The Arts: A Balancing of Visions for
Cultural Transformation. She has served on panels for The New York State
Council on the Arts and The National Endowment for the Arts. She is a
graduate of the Ethical Culture Schools, and holds a BA Degree from Sarah
Lawrence College.
