Possible Explanation Number Ten
Sunglasses are vital. In this play, the characters remember now. Looking back from their new existence as aliens, they recall the painful and funny ways in which their world seemed random and chaotic. They remember a world that was beyond rational explanation. By removing themselves from that world, these aliens can study it dispassionately, and they can make us laugh. In a phone conversation, Constance Congdon, the author of TALES OF THE LAST FORMICANS, told me that the play reflected her love of theatrical improvisation and workshops. "Play with it," she said, "and don't be too rigid about the logic." I have found that the play is like a Picasso painting--it shows three perspectives of a face all at once. Putting those three faces on the stage simutaneously creates moments of confusion and chaos as well as clarity. In other words, it gives us the feeling of everyday life. --Tori Haring-SmithPRODUCTION STAFFStage Manager - Jennifer Stempel
