Courses
Study Abroad
During the junior year students frequently take a semester or the full year to work at other institutions, either in this country or abroad. These have included: Columbia University, The School of the Visual Arts, San Francisco Art Institute, the Institute of Architecture and Urban Studies in New York City, and programs at institutions in Bologna, Copenhagen, Rome, Florence, Paris, London, Kyoto (Japan), Nanking (China) and Berlin, among others. The course of study at other schools must first be provisionally approved by the concentration advisor. Upon completion of the course work, a portfolio, all papers, exams or their equivalent, and a transcript must be presented to the concentration advisor and approved in order to obtain credit. Appropriate forms may be obtained from the Office of International Programs in Rhode Island Hall. Brochures on visual art and history of art programs are available on the second floor of the List Art Center in the black filing cabinet across from the slide tables.
In addition to the universities and institutes around the world with which Brown University has exchange programs (see Office of International Programs library) the Department of Visual Art and the Center for Modern Culture and Media have developed direct relationships with several universities and institutes of specific significance to students with art related concentrations.
